Tasting Notes and Scores
Displaying lovely aromatic depth, the 2003 Riesling Auslese Dorsheimer Pittermannchen explodes from the glass with scents of flowers and spices. A creamy, light to medium-bodied wine of considerable concentration, it luxuriously coats the palate with soft layers of pulp-laden pears and sweet spices that linger in its rich, expressive, prolonged finish. Projected maturity: now-2018. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300

A heady, sweet bouquet of honeysuckle and gardenia. Apple jelly, grapefruit and honey on the palate, transcending the normal bounds of Auslese ripeness, yet juicy and bursting with flowers and fruits in the finish. (I found neither the equally rich and rather gaudy Goldloch Auslese nor the almost over-the-top and overridingly sweet Burgberg Auslese as interesting, well balanced, or dynamic, although with any wines this ripe and this rich in sheer material, one can anticipate a slow and perhaps often surprising evolution.) Potential 2 stars.
